Why do people feel like this is a really effective and salient point when discussing a car they don't like? This is nothing new...no shit sherlock, cars as a form of technology are more than 100 years old. Even more recent innovations like Variable Valve Timing and electronically controlled fuel injection are pushing up on their 30-40th birthdays. Innovations are important, but iterations even more so, because iteration often solves the problems posed by the limitations of nascent technology.

What kills me is entire rants about how the Navigator and the Expedition look the same.
Then everyone loses their minds with excitement when another Aston looks just like the old one with some stripes.
Or a new BMW/Porsche comes out and looks the same.
UGH

Some people just oversimplify some technological advances. Fuel injection has been around for a very long time, and Direct injection is just the next progression in that type of technology. But it's a big one.
